Cancelling tomorrow's class due to death in my family
Sent at: Tuesday, October 6, 2026 at 09:47:58 PM
Urdū-Hindī wālo, ādāb ‘arz,
I learned this evening that my cancer-stricken father-in-law has passed away in his sleep in Karachi. Innā lillāhi wa innā ilaihi rāji‘ūn. As I support my partner through this bereavement and get her to the funeral for Friday, I will have to cancel classes until after the reading break. I’ve just notified Prof. Medani, the Director of the Institute of Islamic Studies.
I’ll see you on Oct. 21st, inshallah. I’ll still be available via email should you need anything.
Mukhlis,
Pasha

Urdū-Hindī wālo,
We didn’t do Mashq 99 today, so be ready to complete it next Wednesday, along with Mashq 100. Mileñge inshāllāh.

Mashqs 95 and 98 for Sep. 30
Sent at: Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at 05:16:52 PM
Urdū-Hindī ko chāhne-wālo!
For next Wednesday, please complete Mashq 95, and do your best with 98, or at least bring it to complete in class. I’ll teach the future tense, and it will be useful to have the mashq to practice with at least.
Here is the film song for Mashq 95: “Dil chāhtā hai”.

Mashqs 92 and 94 for Sept. 23, PMK-bot's troubles
Sent at: Wednesday, September 16, 2026 at 04:36:49 PM
Urdū-Hindī wālo,
I realise that, after all, the lessons and the mashqs as given on the course outline don’t quite align. Therefore I’m back to announcing the upcoming mashqs weekly. For next Wednesday, what makes most sense will be for you to complete Mashq 92 and Mashq 94. Both of these involve film songs, which aren’t on the site home page. Here they are:
- Mashq 92: Kisī disco meñ jāyeñ
- Mashq 94: Mere dushman
As a reminder, please send mashqs to pashamkhan+mashq@gmail.com with the mashq name in the subject and with the mashq as a PDF attachment as specified in the course outline (which you can see for the details). I apologise for PMK-bot, who, now that he is up and running, is sending multiple confirmations because he doesn’t yet know that he’s already taken care of it. While I work on perfecting the new mashq receipt script, you might get see some strange behaviour from PMK-bot. I’m degoogling, so that PMK-bot (i.e. my collection of shell scripts) runs on my local computer instead of Google’s servers. I’ll eventually have them watching my email continuously, but right now I run them manually when I have the time, which is why you’re seeing a lag between sending and receiving a confirmation.
Mukhlis,
Pasha
Mashqs 88 and 89 for tomorrow
Sent at: Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 02:45:18 PM
Salām/Namaste,
It looks as if this announcement system is more or less working. Please be ready to take up Mashq 88 and 89 for tomorrow’s class. Even if you don’t have time to write them out beforehand, be ready to do so in class itself. Note that the mashqs are on the home page for the course, not under “Assignments.” For some reason they begin with Mashq 64, but if you scroll down you’ll see Mashqs 88-89.
Given the limited time we have per week, we will have to follow the schedule rather than playing it by ear this term, so do follow the schedule in the course outline unless I say otherwise.
Mukhlis,
Pasha

Ādāb vidyārthiyo/tālib ‘ilmo!
I’ve taken the expert architectural advice of Liam, and found a new classroom. I’ll see you tomorrow in the Education Building, room 629. I’ll be coming directly from my Intro Urdu-Hindi course, so I may be a bit late myself.

Ādāb ‘arz hai Urdū-Hindī wālo!
Welcome back! I’m just putting the website and course outline for ISLA-553 together. The site (under construction) is here:
https://www.pashamkhan.com/courses/advancedurduhindi/
I’ll see you tomorrow at 11:30am in Morrice Hall room 313 (right beside my office). Since this is not a traditional course, the time and classroom is not listed, and in fact I wasn’t able to secure a classroom until yesterday.
Mukhlis,
Pasha
